Lightweight Aluminum Hood for Aerospace Applications

Lightweight Aluminum Hood for Aerospace Applications

April 17, 2009

For decades Positronic Industries has provided high-reliability D-sub connectors to the aerospace industry. The grounding challenges of composite aircraft, a growing desire for weight reduction and the increasing density of wire bundles in the cabin and cockpit have led Positronic to develop a new lightweight, EMI hood (backshell) for aerospace applications.

The product is made of lightweight aluminum material. Wall thickness is thick enough to be robust, but not so thick that it adds unnecessary weight. Secondly the cable opening is large enough to accommodate high density wire bundles using twisted, shielded pairs. Finally there are up to six ground points inside the hood; four for shell sizes 1 through 3 and six for shell sizes 4 through 6. The ground points are sized and spaced for use with ring terminals up to 0.250” in diameter. The ground screw holes are tapped through the body of the hood which allows the user to terminate from the inside out or from the outside in depending on preference.

Additional features include a thumb grip, two styles of locking systems, square shape to facilitate wire routing and harness assembly, captive jackscrews, and no obstructions immediately behind the connector body which allows the hood to be used with all variants of Positronic Combo-D connectors.
